MYSORE: To monitor employee attendance details better, and to ease the problems of storing, monitoring and retrieving attendance data of the staff, the city engineering colleges have gone digital. The National Institute of Engineering (NIE) and Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) have gone hi-tech with the installation of biometric fingerprint scanners for attendance and time monitoring of the college staff, to ensure better accuracy.

"The fingerprint scanners help us monitor the attendance of the employees much easily and accurately," said SJCE principal B G Sangameshwar, "We installed the instrument a year ago. This system is more accurate than the swipe card, which can be misused or mishandled. Hence, they are more dependable for accurate monitoring of details."
Yet another college that has installed the system is the National Institute of Engineering (NIE). Said college vice-principal G L Shekar, "the fingerprint scanner was installed in the college a year ago. It is always good to upgrade the facilities with the advancement of technology. The intention of installing the device was to record the availability of both teaching and non-teaching staff of the institute and it also helps in tracking employee's attendance record pattern every month."
Though the institutions wish to introduce the system to monitor the attendance of students, it is difficult, as the number of students is more and the attendance has to be monitored for every class, the principals say. "Though it is good to monitor the students attendance too the same way, it is difficult for their attendance has to be recorded for every period they attend. Hence, it is enabled only for the staff now," says Sangameshwar.
